Newark Castle Archers was formed in Spring of 2014 after a number of messages were put onto a Facebook page to see what interest there was in a forming an archery club in Newark. The initial interest was staggering, so a number of meetings were held and a committee was formed.
An open day was held on Sunday 27th April 2014 resulting in overwhelming interest with over 50 people attending the event. With a beginners course waiting list already in place, following the open day, we found ourselves with a list of 40 people. Our first club shoot was held on Monday 28th April with 9 people shooting. With the help of Notts Archery Association and a local coach, the club was able to hold 3 beginners courses during our first summer season! The courses proved very popular and were hugely enjoyed by everyone taking part. In August 2014 we held our first club tournament with archers competing in adult recurve, adult bare bow, adult longbow and juniors. This has become an annual tournament held in August and known as The Summer Trophy. As of November 2014 we had 27 members including a large number of juniors.
Newark Castle Archers is a thriving club currently training at Newark Rugby Club on Thursday Evenings 6-8pm and Sundays 10am-12pm. When we enter our winter shooting season, we will move indoors to train at The Magnus Sports Hall on Thursday Evenings 6.30-8.30pm.
We have been very grateful to the Newark Advertiser for the help they have given us over the years in various articles which has helped to raise our profile. We’d also like to thank Radio Newark for the opportunity to promote our club.
