In memory of Michael Dutton

Newark Castle Archers was founded by Michael Dutton. Without his enthusiasm our club would not exist!

It all started after Michael himself wanted to learn how to do archery but he couldn’t find a club in Newark. He went and did his beginners course over in Grantham and was hooked, so much so he came back to Newark with the soul intention of setting up his own club.

His first step was to see if there was enough interest in the local community so he began putting it out there via various methods. The first meet was to be at the Roaring Meg pub in Newark. Michael was disappointed as many said they would come but only one person did. Not to be put off by this he tried again and this time interest was generated, including Andrew the first person at the first meeting.

Newark Castle Archers was born and Michael had succeeded with his mission and without his determination, love for the sport and huge amounts of enthusiasm the club would not be running as it is now.

Thank you Michael.

Newark Castle Archers was formed in Spring of 2014 after a number of messages were put onto a Facebook page to see what interest there was in a forming an archery club in Newark. The initial interest was staggering, so a number of meetings were held and a committee was formed.

An open day was held on Sunday 27th April 2014 and the interest was overwhelming. We had over 50 people attend. A beginners course waiting list had already been in place and after the open day we had 40 people with their names down. Our first club shoot was held on Monday 28th April which we had 9 people shooting. With the help of Notts Archery Association and a local coach the club was able to hold 3 beginners courses during our first summer season. The courses proved very popular and hugely enjoyed by everyone taking part. We held our first club tournament in August and we had competitions in adult recurve, adult bare bow, adult longbow and juniors. This will be an annual tournament held in August and known as The Summer Trophy. As of November 2014 we had 27 members including a large number of juniors.

Now Newark Castle Archers is a thriving club currently training at Newark Rugby Club on Wednesday and Sunday Evenings during our outdoor season and Magnus Community Sports Centre for our indoor season.

We have been very grateful to the Newark Advertiser for the help they have given us over the years in various articles which has helped to raise our profile. We’d also like to thank Radio Newark for the opportunity to promote our club.
